Recommendations for Training the Next Generation of Clinical Psychologists: Discussion

We are thrilled to announce the publication of “Accelerating the Rate of Progress in Reducing Mental Health Burdens: Recommendations for Training the Next Generation of Clinical Psychologists,” a joint effort by a number of CAAPS members to provide a vision for the future of clinical psychology doctoral training

You can find a copy of the pre-print here. The authors argue that current training models in psychology are not doing enough to address mental illness burdens and instead propose a shift in the breadth of roles taken on by clinical psychologists. In helping to better prepare trainees to serve in these broader roles, the authors propose a flexible, two-phase model of training.

Several community members have published responses to the commentaries, which can be viewed here: “Moving clinical psychology forward to better meet society’s needs.” by J.E. Barnett and “Training Opportunities for Challenge-Focused Career Development In Clinical Psychology” by T. J. Strauman.

We are eager to discuss this proposal with stakeholders. We invite folks to share their thoughts and engage in dialogue regarding the what and how’s of this proposal in the following discussion posts:

(1) Feedback on the proposed changes to the current training model

(2) Issues with implementing the proposed changes

(3) Other ideas and creative solutions to the discussed problems.
